The biggest story of the past NFL season was not the Packers' attempt at a 16-0 regular season, nor was it the Giants' improbable Super Bowl run. It was instead about a man who didn't play a single down in 2011—Peyton Manning.
The chief thing his injury should have taught the teams in the NFL is the value of a backup quarterback.
Backup quarterbacks are a lot like spare tires—you don't think about them until you need them. Then one hot, July afternoon on Florida's turnpike you find your spare inadequate—it's not a good thing.
It wasn't a good thing for the Colts when they found their backups inadequate.
